In my opinion, penny stocks are never good investments. The only people who have any real success with them are those who make markets in them (check out the firm Hill Thompson Magid), otherwise any type of gain you make from them is negligible and the success ratio with them as opposed to small-large cap companies is a lot lower. I’d recommend staying away from them at all costs; they’re only trouble for individual investors.

If I trade stocks do I have to pay taxes on the earnings of my stocks if I live outside of the U.S. for the entire year? The way I interpret the foreign tax credit is that as long as I am outside the USA I don’t have to pay taxes on my earnings so long as I am outside the USA for 330 days out of the year.

If you pay taxes to a foreign government, you can deduct those taxes from your U.S. taxes in many cases. That’s called the foreign tax credit. You can do this even if you never take a step out of the United States. The 330 day rule refers to something else, I believe.

However, you should ask this in the Tax forum, not the Investing forum. They are more knowledgeable on this.

So i am trying to pick the best stock/options broker to trade with – and though puzzling between etrade, zecco, optionsxpress (all registered with various regulators…) i found a few firms that offer stock trading on nyse and nasdaq stocks but don’t appear in sec and finra searches – is this legal?

Save yourself some grief and only deal with large established reputable firms. The credit crisis is not over and other brokerage houses going down is a real possibility. Deal only only with firms that display the SIPC label. Security Investors Protection Corporation. The securities industry equivalent of FDIC insurance.

If you can buy stocks, why would you not be able to sell it when ever the market is open. Foreign investors cannot own the company stock as a share holder, but they can buy and sell ADRs with/ without a broker. You cannot go direct purchase or register as a stock owner of a foreign company. 1029 companies are listed on KOSDAQ for trading.

Try Motleyfool.com or visit CNNfn.com. The Wall Street Journal also puts out a really well written book called ‘Guide to understanding money and investing’ that is at the level you’re looking for.

Keep in mind that individual stock investing is for more experienced investors and that mutual funds are generally most appropriate for the majority.

I am newer to the stock market and I feel blind trading. I want to be able to see all the outstanding orders that need to be filled on a stock but I do not know how to see this. I have seen photo’s other people have posted of all the outstanding Buy orders and all the sell orders, is this a particular indicator and what is it called? What are the different ways of being able to obtain this view?

Level 2 trading shows the highest bids and lowest offer for each exchange.

Level 3 is for brokers and other “privileged” people, that you and I are not included in.

You have to be subscribed to a real time feed, which costs money, to view this.

Start small and then build! Trying to trade everything in the laundry list of securities you laid out is a recipe for disaster. Start with stocks would be my advice, then move on into options as your experience and understand of the market grows. Then you can branch out further into commodities and/or futures if the situation warrants it. In order to actually trade, I would hook up with an online broker. Look for a mix of price as well as service to help make your decision. I like the discount brokers like Fidelity and Schwab, because they give you low costs (though not the lowest) with the best service, and a lot of great online tools to help you get started with investing. I’d check out both of their websites to see what you like.

I’d also ask one other question-why so gung ho about trading stocks? Do you already have a stable foundation of mutual funds built up? Stocks are sexy but also risky…make sure you build in a safety net.
