Question by Wiarumas: Beginner stock market site information?
So I recently graduated and began working a real job making some decent money and was looking into purchasing real stock. When I was in school, I belonged to Investopedia Stock Market simulator and just threw around fake money in their simulator. I did fairly well… and well… I guess I’m looking into doing the real thing now.

First off, what are good sites for beginners that don’t want to put a fortune into the stock market and rather just play around with 500-1000 dollars. Also, what are some tips and advice on a beginner in the stock market? Or do you think I should just max out a Roth IRA and leave the stock market to the simulator?

At your young age I feel you should definitely be in the stock market. But you should learn first.
Read the newspaper IBD. It’s one of the best resources for an investor. (I have no connection to the newspaper whatsoever.)

Two good websites are investopedia.com and marketocracy.com.

Investopedia is great for beginners and also has a lot of training and research materials.

Marketocracy is a little more advanced and makes you follow certain rules much like you would if you were managing a real mutual fund.

Can you apply the Parrondo’s paradox in the stock market?

In brief:

Parrondo’s paradox states that given 2 deals, both with negative expectations, one will always be ahead in the long run if she/he initiates the deals alternately.
It’s a pretty new idea, dating from 1999…if I am right.
At first, when I read about it, I was excited, but later I found the “catch”.

Here is a brief description(easily, without formulas and without examples…):

Suppose you have 2 deals: A and B.
“A” always has negative expectation and “B” is a little more complicated, being constructed from deals B1 and deals B2. Deal B1 has positive expectation of 66% and deal B2 has negative of 25%. However in the long run the deals are summed and the average of B1 and B2 is below 50%, which clearly makes B overall – a negative game.
Parrando suggests that if you play A and B in some order, which corresponds to the modulus of 3(for example) – you will win.
A winning word is for example: “ABBAB”.

Now…in conclusion, what is obvious to the eyes of the investor???
This is obvious :
No one is stupid enough to initiate 3 deals, where 2 deals have negative and 1 has positive expectation. A normal investor will always play only the deal 1, which has positive expectation.

First, you need to have a little understanding how the stock market works, like understand what is stock, mutual fund, P/E ratio, etc. Figure out the difference between the long term and short term investment

Third, keep current on the information and read news about the market. Form your own stradedgy of investing, like, do you want to invest in mutual funds or individual stocks? I like scot trade. Low cost $ 7.99 a trade and they have offices all over the place. This way i can go in and put money in account.

Make sure the company is well known and sometimes the cheapest means exactly that low cost service and slow site.

If you are not a risk taker you should not be trading stocks in the short term. Unless you know what you are doing, you are as likely to lose money as make money. And $ 3,000 is not nearly enough to get involved in day trading – with that amount of money you would not make enough profit to be worth the time you spent. Let’s say you trade all $ 3,000 on a stock, and you catch a 3% increase over a couple of days. After commissions you would net about $ 75-$ 80. And that is not going to happen as often as you would like. There will be trades where you will lose money.

Most preferred stocks are on the NYSE. You buy them the same as others. Those stocks are better as long term investments and not trading on a daily basis.

I bought a book called “Investing for dummies” and really studied it. The rest you will learn from experience of doing it. You will make mistakes, but you can’t be right 100% of the time. Each time you invest, you will learn how the market works. I lost $ 5000 making mistakes, but then made $ 10,000 after wards because I learned from them.

One way to learn painlessly is to start watching CNBC on a regular basis. At first the terms may be a bit over your head but you will start to pick things up. Two good shows to watch are Fast Money (5 pm Eastern time M-F) and Mad Money (6 pm Eastern Time M-F). Also, go to Amazon.com and search on “beginning stock investing” and you will find a ton of books. Buy one and read it.

If I trade stocks do I have to pay taxes on the earnings of my stocks if I live outside of the U.S. for the entire year? The way I interpret the foreign tax credit is that as long as I am outside the USA I don’t have to pay taxes on my earnings so long as I am outside the USA for 330 days out of the year.

If you pay taxes to a foreign government, you can deduct those taxes from your U.S. taxes in many cases. That’s called the foreign tax credit. You can do this even if you never take a step out of the United States. The 330 day rule refers to something else, I believe.

However, you should ask this in the Tax forum, not the Investing forum. They are more knowledgeable on this.
