I am looking into models primarily for trading ETF’s for the short term gain, and long term portfolio development. I want to develop a balanced portfolio for the long-term. I need to build up cash to help me get there. Any suggestions on what free market timing software programs there might be out there worth using?

You could try etrade pro. It costs 99 bucks per month to use.

I haven’t used it, but am considering it.

It is tight.

It has level 2 quotes and has nasdaq order book. That means you can see all the current bid and ask limit orders for a particular stock. So you are not guessing anymore about the short term momentum of a stock.

You’ll have to be more specific.

Are you looking to trade?
Short term (intra day, a few days, a couple of weeks)
Medium term (identify)
Long term (year or more)

Are you going to be a “Fundamental” or “Technical” trader/investor.
If you’re not familiar with these terms…. read some more.

Ultimately your best “software” may be from the on line brokers. You should be able to download or practice with their platform or perhaps web site.

Arbitrage opportunities are available essentially only to people who have miniscule trading costs and can execute at lightening speeds, i.e., only big banks. They have arbitrage machines to take care of miniscule mispricings. I think you need to go read up a little on arbitrage.

Out of pure curiosity regarding technical and legal aspects (I’m aware of the financial risks), is it legal to run an automated trading software that deals for you, using some kind of pseudo-AI?

If it is legal, how can one connect such software to the stock market? I’m guessing going through normal websites would not be suitable in terms of latency/costs, not to mention technically inefficient. Does one require special accreditations/permits to do so? How can one get them?

Yes, those tools exist – and they are legal. Brokerage agencies provide this type of tool for their clients … and brokerages are the only people who can legally trade stocks & bonds.

Look at “Amerivest” at TD Ameritrade … you enter your information, the software decides your specific risk tolerance, and makes trades “automatically” to maintain your risk profile with the money you have invested. Other brokers have similar programs … you make no decisions after you answer the automated questions that determine your level of risk tolerance, the length of time before you retire, etc.

So … yes, it is legal … yes, they exist … and you have access when you open an account at just about any brokerage.
