If you are not a risk taker you should not be trading stocks in the short term. Unless you know what you are doing, you are as likely to lose money as make money. And $ 3,000 is not nearly enough to get involved in day trading – with that amount of money you would not make enough profit to be worth the time you spent. Let’s say you trade all $ 3,000 on a stock, and you catch a 3% increase over a couple of days. After commissions you would net about $ 75-$ 80. And that is not going to happen as often as you would like. There will be trades where you will lose money.

Hi, I am European and where I come from we don’t really have a culture of investing on stocks or anything. All people I know just keep their money on the bank account and watch it depreciate year by year. I realized a few years ago that I don’t want to be in that situation and decided to diversify a little bit and start to build up some physical gold, just in case something happens to the Euro (and now of course I am glad that I did this!).
I want to make the next step but don’t know how to start. I am living in Asia (Singapore). Do I need to go back to my country in Europe to start investing and set up an account? Can I do it in my new country even though I am on expat basis (not permanent citizen)? How about using a U.S. account as foreigner?
What are things I should look out for? I guess I haven’t gotten to the point yet where I can actually phrase any detailed questions, but I will be more than happy for any advice any of you can give.
10 points for the person with the most understandable (I’m beginner remember?) and complete answer, who can give me a confident feeling on what to do next.

Right now as stock prices go down across the board it seems like an opportunity to buy stocks in sound companies like Walmart or Microsoft for example. Sure, the value may go down but at some point it will have to go back up again and then you will recognize an increase in worth in your stocks. What am I missing in this picture and why aren’t people with a few extra bucks snapping up these bargains?

The problem is getting the few extra bucks out of investments we already have. This is the time to buy. It is like the end of season clearance sale at a dept. store. Notice how the month of october is always a down market.

Head to your local library, ask the librarian for the investment section…even a small library will have a few dozen books on investing (plus there is inter-library loan). Head to the web site of the SEC – they have a ton of good tutorials.
And just so you know, you will make mistakes – everyone who invests does…the goal is to make fewer mistakes than correct guesses.

Let’s see:
Investing in the stock market means that you are buying an ownership interest in a corporation which provides valuable goods and services. If you invest broadly enough in stock markets, you are betting that global growth will happen during the holding period which accrues to the owners of global corporations.
Trading in futures means that you think that pork bellies are going to go either up or down faster than they would go in the other direction which would cause you to be closed out.
Trading in options means either you are an amateur looking for increased leverage on a directional bet in just about any market anywhere or you have some opinion about volatility which is different from the price of volatility expressed in the option.

I’ve always been told that the stock market is a good long term investment if you have a diversified portfolio.
OK, so why are ALL stocks tanking right now? If investors are in it for the long run, why sell everything and not just finanicial institution stocks?
For example, let’s say I have stock in Apple, Merck, ADM, & Krogers, should I bail on them now like everyone elsel seems to be doing?
Why aren’t more people weathering the storm with their stocks?

There are two classes of stock funds, Bull Investments that go up when the market is good, and down when the market is bad.
The other type of stock is known as Bear Investments, they do just the opposite of Bull Stocks. They go up when the market goes down, and they go down when the market goes up.
Year To Date, Bear Market Investments are showing stellar results in the 65% to 110% increase in value.
For some reason most investors missed the turnaround point and kept their Bull Investments.

I’m looking to invest some money. I want to get some suggestions where to put it. Penny stocks maybe. I’m looking into renewable resources and robotics, possibly oil. Any and all well thought out suggestions are appreciate. Heard something about hedgefunds too? Thank you.

For now, find a bank CD with a good yield. Park the money there while you learn more about how different investments and investment strategies work.
Some recommended reading:
-Wall Street Journal Guide to Understanding Money and Investing (the basics)
-The Neatest Little Guide to Stock Market Investing (a good introduction to investing strategies and value investing)
-Webster’s New World Finance and Investment Dictionary (you don’t have to read it, it just comes in handy when you come across a term you don’t recognize)
-Technical Analysis for Dummies (technical analysis always helps to determine if your investment is going bad)
Also, some other things you need to learn about are:
- taxes (and wash sales; I didn’t know about wash sales until one of my mentors told me about them)
- different brokers and broker’s fees (some charge you if you do nothing!)
- bankruptcies (a lot of people have lost money buying shares of bankrupt companies)
- market terms and lingo (it can be confusing at first)
As for penny stocks, ugh, no thanks; that’s the best way to get caught in a “pump and dump” scam. I think alternative energy is the next bubble, and bubbles always pop, so it’s good if you can figure when to get in and out; it’s bad if you can’t. Oil is currently a speculator’s game; be aware or beware. Hedge funds are generally for investors with a lot of money to invest (think “millions”) Robotics might be something. But don’t ever fall in love with a stock; it doesn’t understand what love is, and it won’t love you back. Recognize stocks only for what they are: a way to make money.
I know you don’t want to hear “Wait and learn more” because I didn’t want to hear it when I started out. But, the first year I got into the market, I lost $ 10k.
